A fruitful morning
Bea and I took off much earlier than we normally make it out of the house this morning for a jaunt to Boggy Creek Farm, east of downtown. We heard a rumor (on their website) they might have "the last of the December strawberries." Bea LOVES strawberries and she jumped out of bed chanting Boggy Creek, Boggy Creek before her eyes could adjust to the light.
Now, there are many, many downsides to Texas weather, but strawberries in December/January are not one of them. I felt it was just right to take advantage of it. It was a misty, moisty morning but the traffic gods blessed us and we made it there early for their market. But no strawberries. Oh well.
Instead, poor us, we got wonderful local sweet potatoes, carrots, brussel sprouts, broccoli, chard & baby lettuce + a couple organic south Texas oranges and grapefruits. Oh, and some wonderful eggs from their chickens. (Did you even know chicken eggs came in that lovely shade of green?)
After loading up our baskets, we fed our carrot greens to the pretty chickens and walked along the rows to spy the strawberry plants sleeping under their white blanket. I left there excited about cooking with our yummy haul this week and really thankful for the opportunity to spend some relaxed time at such an authentic place with my sweet little daughter. Thanks lucky stars.

Sounds like a wonderful day! I love our local farmers markets. I have never seen green eggs. If I did I would certainly take a picture too!

Next time, we make it to Austin you will have to take me there. That sounds like a great place.
Oh! by the way the Deanna Rose place now has installed a Dairy Farm (small) to their location so kids can see a real cow being milked.
Also, there are tours of all local dairy farms (schatto) so when you come up maybe this Spring we should go.

We get eggs from a local farm most of the year and we love it when we get a green one. Hooray for you for eating local and making sure Bea knows food grows on farms and not in shrinkwrap.

Sorry to hear there weren't any strawberries but that egg is pretty awesome. My mom gets fresh eggs from a lady in La Crosse. Every so often there is a green one.

Hi! I found your blog via your comment about pineapples over on Yarnstorm. What lovely things you have on your site:gorgeous photographs, and the quilts!!
(Re. the pineapple as a symbol of hospitality, there is one in the cast-iron fireback of a big fireplace in our house here in Scotland - it looks wonderful when the fire is lit).
