A Year of Color

Crayons_original

Do you love colors?  Do you love taking photos?  Did you like seeing everyone's photos of colors during the recent color week photo challenges?  Yeah, me too.  So I had the wild hair to start a new challenge -- A Year of Color.  I will be taking a photo showcasing a different color every week for a year.  I started a Year of Color Flickr group here.  Join me if you dare!

To be clear, I plan on featuring one photo on my blog on Sundays and then adding it to the Flickr group.  You can do as you wish -- posting it to the group any day between Sunday and Saturday and using it on your blog or not.  You don't have to post a photo every week of course -- just when the mood strikes you.  And you can post more, up to 4 a week, if you so desire.

When I was a kid, the first thing I did with a box of crayons was to put them in rainbow order.  My sister and I had a lazy susan crayon caddy which we obsessively kept in rainbow order.  I put everything in rainbow order back then, especially school supplies, stickers, and candy.  (Tart-n-Tiny's were the best cause you could stack them up in the little pastel colored bar graphs.  Do they still make these?)  I still have the tendency -- Ex: shirts in my closet hang by color in rainbow order.  Obsessive?  Fun?  You be the judge.

But I haven't made my mind up about whether this photo challenge should go in rainbow order.  My rainbow side really wants to do it in order, but I'm afraid it will get a little old, gradually progressing from sky blue to indigo over the course 8 weeks.  If you are interested, please weigh in via a comment below.  Either way, WHITE starts Sunday.  And either way, by the end of the year, we are going to have a collection of beautiful colors!

I love this idea. Always looking for another excuse to get creative with my camera, and taking pictures that don't (according to everyone in my family but me) make any sense. It's about color! That's good enough for me :)

Thanks for putting this on!

Did you get the big box of 120 crayons? We just got that, but had to put them in "Toddler Order" - which is very, very random...I think your rainbow order is a good start. You can always change a little mid-stream if you need to mix it up.

I obsessively put things in rainbow order STILL to this day. I HATE things out of order! Whenever kids come to my house, I have a big basket of crayons, and they are never allowed to touch mine in the boxes for fear they will mess up the order, chew on them, or *gasp* need to sharpen them.

I appreciate the picture!

Your day was better today yes? 8-)
A year of color, huh? Good idea. I'd go for mixing it up weekly, not in rainbow order, but either way it'll be groovy. I confess, my closet is grouped by color though.
I'll play along too.
(p.s.Did you get my email?)

Great idea, and even better idea to put the crayons in rainbow order. I can't believe I never thought of that. I say skip around colors. I agree that doing slight gradations of color could get a bit old...

Brilliant idea!! I might join you! Sounds like a lot of fun. :-)

I'm already thinking that rainbow order will be too restrictive. It will be fun to choose colors based on things appropriate to the week - based on special events or holidays, seasonal produce, etc. - even though those things don't translate internationally necessarily... My mind is turning over ideas...

Great idea, Amy :)

This sounds like fun to me! I'm in :)

It's not obsessive OR fun - it's obsessive fun. Both things can go together.

No really. :)

I'm a colour-orderer too so I guess I'm in!

Great idea! I'll join (when I remember).

I'm envious of your crayon carousel you had as a kid. My friend had one and I didn't. It was a source of much misery!

I'll take some responsibility for your obsessive color behavior. I'm sure I encouraged that rainbow arrangement. What's a kid to do?!

Sounds like a fun photo challenge. I'm in.
Speaking of rainbow's I saw one on the way to work just a couple of days ago. Still amazes me.
If you study color in art class you learn to appreciate it even more when you are challenged to create colors starting with a gray base. And its amazing how even colors can affect your black and white photos.

I think I will be playing along on this one! I like the idea of colors rather than themes since color is usually what I see when I take a photograph!

Yea! Sounds fun. Now I just need to get that new camera ordered. And yes, I STILL put my crayons in rainbow order (mommy has her OWN box, thank you very much), and my closet is the same.

Cheers!

Yes, I'm doing this year of color thing. And I'm happy to hear a happy post after yesterday. On days like that, and I certainly do have my share of those, it always helps me to try harder to engross myself in the kids play, to really get down on their level and uncoil myself in the moment. With a bottle of wine, preferably, but I'll take beer if nothing else is available.

Will you be making a button for our sidebars? mmmm....something colorful?
:o)

I just had a cool idea for my photos. I'm going to format them all the same (ie four photo mosaic) and then at the end of the year I'm going to make an album out of them! Yay me!! How anal!!!

ok, i just wen tthru my son's almost untouched box of 64 crayones (can you belive the kid doesn't like to crayola?) and re-acquainted myself with the occupants. The neighborhood has gotten more gentrified...carribean blue for example. Or then agian, consider beaver, lets not. It is just plain wrong to name a color (kinda brownish-gray) beaver. Please do not pick that as one of your 52 colors.

yah! for color year

Sounds like fun - nothing better than a new box of crayons. I always liked to have them in order too (even now).

I just got back from a week away, but I'm interested in joining. Found your link on Dawn's blog. And I also followed her week of color when she did that with you, too.

Sounds like fun. I'll post later this week~Thanks.

I'm in! I found this via Dawn's blog, and it sounds like a lot of fun!

Count me in, what a grand idea! I love your blog here, glad to have found you (via Dawn of 4.53)! I love taking pics, colors AND rainbows! So, I personally like the rainbow idea, and the gradual melding of colors. But whatever you decide will work for me, sounds like FUN and inspiration!
Okay, I'm off to find a *white* moment to post.
blessings~

mmm, I like rainbow order, I still have to arrange the kids crayons, and often like to hang my washing on the line in rainbow order (my neighbour thinks I am crazy!!) great idea though, I will try to participate, though project spectrum only changes colour once a month and I forget to keep up with that - I will be a part-timer!!
